The Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR) is an independent, non-governmental pan-African organisation, based in Cape Town, South Africa. Over the past 49 years, it has worked to promote constructive, creative, and co-operative approaches to the resolution of conflicts and the reduction of violence in Africa. CCR has produced ground-breaking research on African security and governance issues, conducted extensive capacity-building and training, and contributed to peace processes across Africa.

The Centre invites applications from suitable South African citizens or candidates with permanent residency in South Africa, who are available for an immediate start, to fill the following fixed-term, two-month contract position:

RESEARCHER or SENIOR RESEARCHER

CCR's Policy Development and Research (PDR) project seeks to contribute in critical and constructive ways to strengthening national, regional, and external efforts aimed at consolidating peacebuilding and region-building in Africa, through the convening of high-level policy seminars and the publication of academically rigorous, policy-relevant research. The Centre has wide-ranging research experience on the African Union (AU) and Africa's regional economic communities (RECs); the continent's relations with major external actors, such as the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU); and South Africa's foreign policy role, as well as key African peace, security, and governance issues.


Key responsibilities:

  • To assist in organising and rapporteuring a high-level policy seminar and public dialogue on the Southern African Development Community (SADC);
  • To produce a policy brief from the seminar, as well as opinion editorials related to the discussion themes of the seminar and public dialogue;
  • To monitor and evaluate the immediate outcomes of the seminar;
  • To contribute to the writing of funder reports; and
  • To conduct research and other tasks, as may be required within the scope of the Centre's policy development and research work.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Politics, International Relations, or a related field in the Social Sciences for appointment as a Senior Researcher, or
    Master's degree in Politics, International Relations, or a related field in the Social Sciences for appointment as a Researcher;
  • Excellent writing, editing, research, and analytical skills;
  • Some experience of organising conferences, workshops, or seminars; and
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and use of the internet.

Advantages:

  • Knowledge of SADC and/or peacebuilding and region-building issues in Southern Africa.
  • Experience of working in a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
  • A driver's licence and own transport.
