Concept Papers - Policy Development and Research Project

CCR's Policy Development and Research (PDR) Project convenes policy advisory group meetings in Africa with about 20-25 participants. CCR also organises policy seminars with about 30 participants, which, between July 2012 and June 2016, will focus on PDR's four key areas of research: Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding in Africa; the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group (ACP) and the European Union (EU); Region-Building and Regional Integration in Africa; Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Africa.

Between June 2013 and December 2016, CCR will also seek, through its project on "Strengthening South Africa's Bilateral and Multilateral Foreign Policy", to explore and enhance the potential leadership role that South Africa can play in promoting peace and security, as well as regional integration and development in Africa, by focusing on its interlocking relationships within Southern Africa and the continent, including its key partnerships with other African countries, as well as its engagement with international organisations such as the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), the African Union, the United Nations, and the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) group.

CCR's policy research between 2008 and 2012 focused on: Southern Africa's Peacebuilding Challenges; Post-conflict Peacebuilding: the AU, the UN, and Civil Society; HIV/AIDS and Post-conflict Societies; and Peacebuilding: Africa and the European Union. Policy research between 2004 and 2008 focused on: South Africa's role in Africa; The UN's role in Africa; The relationship between the African Union (AU) and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD); and HIV/AIDS and security.

CCR sends its concept papers to participants invited to its policy seminars. These papers outline the key objectives and themes of policy research seminars and policy advisory group meetings. Presentations by participants, and/or chapters commissioned by CCR for these seminars, are subsequently used to produce policy reports and edited volumes, which CCR then disseminates widely both within and outside Africa.
